Xiaomi has introduced a completely new series in India, the Redmi Y (the Y apparently stands for ‘You’). The first two smartphones in the series were launched today at an official event in Gurugram, India. The event also saw the global stable launch of MIUI 9, Xiaomi’s custom Android skin. With the launch of both these phones, the Chinese brand will cater to Indian users in the sub Rs. 10,000 smartphone market. The Y1 is a selfie-focused smartphone whereas the Y1 Lite is aimed to provide a bigger display at a low price.
Let’s take a detailed look at both of these newly launched smartphones:
Redmi Y1 is the first phone launched by Xiaomi in the Y series. The phone will be available in two variants 3GB RAM/32GB storage and 4GB RAM/64GB storage. They are priced Rs. 8,999 and Rs. 10,999 respectively.
Design-wise, the phone looks quite similar to other phones by Xiaomi such as the Redmi 4a. The Y1 is available in two different colours: Gold and Dark Grey. The major highlight of the smartphone is its front selfie camera that boasts of a 16-megapixel sensor along with an LED flash light. The rear camera rocks a 13-megapixel sensor accompanied by a dual-LED flash.
The Redmi Y1 fits a 5.5-inch HD display protected with Corning Gorilla Glass. The latest MIUI 9 will also be available for the phone starting mid-November. It comes with a 3080mAh battery pack which Xiaomi claims will last a day.
One of the features that received the most applause during the event was the presence of dedicated microSD card slot instead of a hybrid one. The storage can be expanded externally up to 128GB.
Redmi Y1 Lite
Redmi Y1 Lite as the name says is a toned down version of the Y1. According to Xiaomi, the phone was introduced to fill the current void of a good 5.5-inch smartphone in the sub Rs. 10,000 price range. The Y1 Lite comes with a 5.5-inch HD display and is priced at Rs. 6,999. The phone comes in only one variant, with 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. Even this phone has got a dedicated microSD card slot and it can be expanded up to 128GB.
It has a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front shooter. The phone runs on Snapdragon 425 processor which is clocked at 1.4GHz and has four cores. Battery capacity in this phone is 3080mAh which is expected to give you a full day’s charge.
Both the phones are Amazon exclusive. They will go on sale from 12 noon, 8th November and can be bought from Amazon, Mi.com and a bunch of Xiaomi-partnered offline retailers such as Croma, Vijay Sales, Reliance Digital, etc.
