- Xiaomi and Leica have confirmed a strategic partnership
- The first co-developed imaging flagship phone will debut in July
- It could be the rumoured Xiaomi 12 Ultra
Xiaomi-Leica partnership rumours that surfaced earlier this year have been confirmed today. The Chinese manufacturer has confirmed that it has entered a long-term strategic partnership with the German camera brand, which has previously collaborated with smartphone OEMs like Sharp, Huawei, and Panasonic. The company also confirmed that the first Xiaomi-Leica co-developed imaging flagship phone will be launched in July.
It is not the first time that a China-based smartphone manufacturer has teamed up with a well-known camera brand. Vivo entered into a partnership with ZEISS in 2020 to launch the Vivo X50 lineup. OPPO and OnePlus have worked with Hasselblad on flagships like the OPPO Find X5 series and the OnePlus 10 Pro.
Xiaomi 12 Ultra could be the first Leica co-developed phone
It appears that Xiaomi will be confirming the details of its camera-focused flagship smartphone in the coming weeks. But if the rumours are true, the Xiaomi 12 Ultra could be the first phone from the company to come with Leica optimised cameras.
Speculations are rife that the Xiaomi 12 Ultra’s camera setup will have a 50-megapixel main camera, a 48-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 48-megapixel telephoto snapper with 5x optical zoom. The same camera setup was made available on the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra. However, instead of the Samsung GN2 main lens, the 12 Ultra could be equipped with the all-new Sony IMX800, which is said to be the world’s first 1-inch mobile image sensor.
