Xiaomi is one of the leading smartphone makers in the country, and has a vast offline retail presence, both through its own Mi branded and third-party brick and mortar stores. However, amidst calls against China-made products, the company is facing a Catch-22 situation.
Abiding by a circular from the All India Mobile Retailers Association (AIMRA), Xiaomi has reportedly removed its logo from several retail stores. The brand has put up a new banner on these stores showing the ‘Made in India’ text to prevent any backlash.
Xiaomi covers its retail store logos with ‘Made in India’ banners
First reported by The Economic Times on Thursday, several Xiaomi stores have reportedly had their signboards and logo covered with the ‘Made in India’ logo. Additionally, the company has also asked its employers to avoid wearing their uniforms to be on the safe side. This move came after the All India Mobile Retailers Association (AIMRA) wrote a letter expressing concerns over the ongoing sentiments in a certain section of the population.
In its letter to brands, AIMRA stated, “Damage to these boards should not be the retailer’s liability as the circumstances are not in our hands or in our control.” Following this, Xiaomi has changed the boards and banners in stores across Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, Agra, and Patna.
