Xiaomi Mi 9 and Mi 9 SE With Triple Rear Cameras, In-Display Fingerprint Scanner Launched In China

A few days back, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi had announced the launch date of its upcoming flagship. Today, the company has launched the Mi 9 in its home country. Prior to launch, most of the key specifications and features of the device have already been revealed in teasers. The Mi 9 is the successor to last year’s Mi 8. Let’s take a detailed look at what this device offers out of the box:

Display & Design:

In terms of display, the Xiaomi Mi 9 sports a 6.4-inch screen bearing full HD+ resolution with an AMOLED panel and waterdrop notch on the top. It is surrounded by thin bezels and a narrow chin which is claimed to be smaller than its predecessor. The device offers a 90.7 percent screen-to-body ratio for an immersive viewing experience. The display features Sunlight mode 2.0 and Reading mode 2.0 that improves readability in all conditions.

Design-wise, the Mi 9 flaunts a curved design on the back. It is available in three attractive gradient colors – Lavender Violet, Ocean Blue and Piano Black. The front of the device is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6 against scratches and accidental damage. The Mi 9 is equipped with an in-display fingerprint scanner for unlocking the device. It also sports a dedicated Google Assistant button on the side. 


For photography enthusiasts, the Mi 9 features a triple rear camera module. It comprises of a 48MP primary sensor with f/1.75 aperture, an f/2.2 16MP ultra wide angle lens, and a 12MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom. The camera setup is aligned vertically and accompanied by laser autofocus that combines both PDAF and CDAF for fast and accurate focusing. The lens of rear camera is protected by Sapphire glass which ensures durability and protection against scratches. Upfront, the Mi 9 houses a 20MP snapper for clicking selfies.

Hardware & OS:

Under the hood, the Mi 9 is equipped with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 855 flagship chipset clocked at 2.2GHz. The device is available in two configurations – 6GB + 128GB and 8GB + 256GB. There is a microSD card slot for expanding the storage. Xiaomi has added Game Turbo feature that boosts the device for a lag-free gaming experience.

On the software front, the Mi 9 runs on Android 9.0 Pie with Xiaomi’s custom MIUI 10 layered on the top. MIUI 10 offers improvements and comes with customisation options. It features Dynamic Wallpaper (similar to macOS Mojave) and an Always-on color display. The Mi 9 comes with a Dark Mode feature that is claimed to support most settings and system apps.

Battery & Connectivity:

The Mi 9 is powered by a 3,300mAh battery unit with support for 27W fast charging. On the connectivity front, the device is equipped with a new NFC chip for faster payments and dual frequency GPS for better navigation. The Mi 9 also features IR Blaster for controlling home appliances. There is a Smart antenna which automatically switches the antenna for a strong network signal.

Mi 9 Transparent & SE Editions:

Alongside the standard edition, Xiaomi has also launched the Mi 9 in two special editions. The Transparent edition comes with the same tech specs, except that the device packs 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. Xiaomi admitted that the internals seen in the transparent edition aren’t real – just like the Mi 8 Explorer Edition.

The Mi 9 SE is a stripped down variant of the standard edition. It sports a smaller 5.97-inch AMOLED display. The SE variant also features an in-display fingerprint scanner. The device sports a triple rear camera setup comprising of the same 48MP primary sensor. However, there is an 8MP secondary and a 13MP third sensor compared to the standard edition. Under the hood, the Mi 9 SE is equipped with Snapdragon 712 chipset. It is available in two configurations i.e. 6GB + 64GB and 6GB + 128GB. The device is powered by a 3,070mAh battery with support for 18W charging.

Pricing & Availability:

Beginning with the standard edition, the base variant of the Mi 9 (6GB + 128GB) is priced at 2,999 Yuan (~Rs 31,739). The 8GB + 256GB variant retails at 3,299 Yuan (~Rs 34,914). The Transparent Edition carries a price tag of 3,999 Yuan (~Rs 42,323). The Mi 9 SE’s base variant is priced at 1,999 Yuan (~Rs 21,200) while the 6GB + 128GB will cost 2,299 Yuan (~Rs 24,320).

Xiaomi has launched the Mi 9 only in China for now. There is no official word regarding if and when the device will be launched in India and international markets.
