Xiaomi Mi A1 Launched With Flagship Dual Cameras and Android One

Xiaomi has been teasing users with image samples and graphics with the text ‘Flagship Dual Cameras’ since a few days now. Finally, in the global launch held in New Delhi today at 12PM, the brand has unveiled a new series of phones and this one is known as the Xiaomi Mi A1. Apart from boasting the flagship quality dual cameras, the A1 has revived the Android One program in collaboration with Google. Xiaomi claimed this to be the “company’s biggest global launch in the country ever”. Let’s know everything there is to know about this newly launched Xiaomi phone.

Design, Display and Audio

Xiaomi Mi A1 comes with a premium design and full metal unibody, resembling exactly with the previously launched ‘Mi 5X’. It has rounded back edges which makes it feel good while holding the phone. The phone is 7.3 mm thin and weighs 165 grams. Xiaomi claims the back portion has an anti-fingerprint coating which will make it resistant to fingerprint marks and smudges. To efficiently manage the heat, Mi A1 has two layer Pyrolytic graphite sheet.

The phone will be launched in three different colours: Black, Gold and Rose Gold. The front portion of the phone will be black in the first one whereas the latter two will be in white.

The Mi A1 rocks a 5.5-inch Full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Just like most of Xiaomi phones, the A1 has an IPS LCD panel. The panel is fitted on a 2.5D curved glass which ensures a smooth experience while you glide your fingers to use the interface. The phone is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass, which is surprising for a Xiaomi phone.

The phone comes with DHS Audio Calibration Algorithm as well as a standalone amplifier, both of which promise to vastly improve the audio quality in headphones.

The major USP of Mi A1 is the presence of what Xiaomi calls ‘Flagship Dual Cameras’. On the rear, the phone packs in two sensors – one is a 12MP wide angle sensor to provided to capture a wider angle optically, this lens has an f/2.2 aperture; the other one is a 12MP telephoto lens to allow up to 2x zoom optically (10x digital zoom) without any loss in quality, the lens has an f/2.6 aperture. The rear camera comes with ‘Beautify 3.0’ to enhance your portrait pictures. It comes with ‘Smart Beautify’ which Xiaomi claims that it maintains the natural face elements while enhancing the picture with good colour correction.

The dual-camera setup also enables ‘Portrait mode’ which captures DSLR-like pictures while blurring the background and focusing exclusively on the subject of the picture. Xiaomi uses stereoscopic imaging + deep learning algorithm for clicking portrait pictures.

Xiaomi also claimed that the dual-camera setup on the Mi A1 is as good as the iPhone 7 Plus. The brand also made some comparison shots with the iPhone 7 Plus and OnePlus 5. Bringing a flagship dual-camera setup into a price range this low definitely seems quite appreciable but testing the cameras on-hand would reveal how good the cameras actually are. Apart from showing portrait pictures, Xiaomi also displayed some landscape, urban and low-light shots which seemed quite good.

For selfies, a 5-megapixel shooter is provided which allows users to beautify their faces in real-time, even while live streaming on any particular platform.

Performance and Storage

Under the hood, the Mi A1 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core chipset with 14nm Finfet technology. The phone also packs in 4GB of RAM to ensure seamless multi-tasking.

In terms of storage, the phone gets 64GB internal memory which can be further expanded up to 128GB via a microSD card. Similar to most Xiaomi phones, this one has a hybrid slot which means you would need to choose between additional storage or more memory.

The phone only comes in a single variant with respect to storage and memory.

Xiaomi Mi A1 marks the partnership of Xiaomi and Google as this is the first phone by the company to come with Android One. This means the Mi A1 will be the first Xiaomi phone to come with stock Android. This also makes it evident that all the additional features, interface as well as some bloatware in the MIUI 9 won’t be present in the new phone. However, the A1 will still have some proprietary apps from Xiaomi including the camera app, Mi Store and Mi Remote app.

The phone comes with Android 7.1 Nougat but since it comes with Android One, the phone will also receive one guaranteed update i.e. Android 8.0 Oreo. Even the security updates will be pushed to the phone as they arrive. The phone will come with unlimited high-quality photo and video storage from Google Photos.

Google has also claimed that the Xiaomi Mi A1 will be the first device to get Android P, which is still in development.

Battery and Connectivity

The Xiaomi Mi A1 packs in a 3080mAh battery pack which will work in sync with the power efficient Snapdragon 625 to ensure maximum battery efficiency.

As for connectivity, the phone has 4G VoLTE support, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac and GPS/ A-GPS. For charging and establishing other connections, an USB Type-C port is provided. A 3.5mm audio jack for headphones is offered as well. It also has an IR blaster which allows you to control home appliances with the help of Mi Home app.

The Xiaomi Mi A1 is priced lucratively at Rs. 14,999 and it comes in only one variant (4GB RAM + 64GB storage). The phone will be exclusively available on Flipkart and the sale starts from September 12 at 12 noon. For existing and new Airtel customers, 200GB of 4G data can be availed.
