Xiaomi Mi Box 4K with Android TV platform and HDR 10 launched: price, specifications

On: May 8, 2020

Xiaomi’s Mi TVs made their debut in India two years ago, and in that period, have managed to sell over 4 million units as per the brand. While the smart TV category has been growing steadily in India, there’s still a large number of TV users in India who own a ‘dumb’ TV, but still want access to apps and streaming services. Xiaomi is looking to capitalise on that segment with the launch of its latest product, the Mi Box 4K.

The media streaming device is similar to the Fire TV Stick in terms of functionality. It comes with Android TV, HDR 10 and access to nearly all the streaming apps, barring Apple TV+.

Xiaomi Mi Box 4K specifications and features

The Mi Box 4K offers access to major streaming apps

As the name suggests, the Mi Box 4K is a media streaming box. It runs Android TV 9.0, and comes with access to all major streaming apps, in addition to the vast library of apps available on the Play Store. At launch, users can access Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, Prime Video, YouTube, ZEE5, Eros Now, Voot and Alt Balaji, to name a few. Xiaomi says users will be able to download over 5,000 apps from the Android ecosystem.

The Mi Box 4K supports 4K streaming of course, but can also be used with 720p and 1080p TVs. HDR 10 is also supported. Being an Android TV device, you get Chromecast built in, and in the case of the Mi Box, you can also cast in 4K resolution.

The Mi Remote that ships with the device features a Google Assistant button. Apart from answering basic queries, Assistant on the Mi Box is also capable of turning off the TV, playing a particular show/movie, controlling any IoT device with Google integration, displaying your agenda, and more. The remote comes with hotkeys for Netflix and Prime Video as well.

The Mi Box is powered by a 64-bit 2GHz quad-core processor with a Mali-450 GPU, 2GB of DDR3 RAM and 8GB of eMMC storage. In terms of connectivity, it features one HDMI 2.0 port, one USB 2.0 port, 3.5mm digital out and Bluetooth 4.2 (this also lets you connect wireless headphones). Dolby audio and DTS 2.0 are also present.

Xiaomi says the Mi Box is the first Android TV streaming box to support the Data Saver feature, which was introduced on Mi TVs in 2019. The feature will be available as an OTA update on retail units. The Mi Box automatically switches to Data Saver when connected to a mobile hotspot instead of Wi-Fi.

Xiaomi Mi Box 4K price in India

The Mi Box 4K is priced at Rs 3,499 in India. It will go on sale starting May 11th at 12pm, via Mi.com, Flipkart, Mi Homes and Mi Studios.
