Since Xiaomi had launched the Mi Max 2 in May 2016, its fans were hoping that the Mi Max 3 could be announced in May this year. However, at the end of May, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun had confirmed that the Mi Max 3 would be launching in July. The day has finally arrived as the company has officially announced the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 in China. Compared to the predecessor model, the Mi Max 3 has arrived with better design, bigger display, larger battery, faster processor, dual rear cameras and more. What’s icing on the cake is that the Chinese manufacturer is selling the Mi Max 3 with the same pricing as the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 in China.
Design and Display
The Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is a bit taller and slimmer than the Mi Max 2. With dimensions of 176.2 x 87.4 x 8mm and 211 grams, the metal-bodied Mi Max 3 has been designed for single-handed use.
According to Xiaomi, the size of the Mi Max 2 is similar to a conventional smartphone with 6.3-inch display. It has stated that in order to house a larger display, it has cut down the size of upper and bottom bezels respectively by 4.7mm and 7mm. It is narrow than Mi Max 2 by 1.3mm. Buyers can purchase the Mi Max 3 in colors like Black Stone, Deep Sea Blue and Dream Gold.
Xiaomi Mi Max 3’s Full HD+ resolution IPS LCD screen of 6.9 inches offers an aspect ratio of 18:9 and nearly 85 percent screen-to-body ratio. The display is tucked under a layer of 2.5D curved glass.
The mammoth display of Mi Max 3 offers 50 percent more contrast, 17 percent more brightness and 17 percent more color gamut than the 6.44-inch IPS LCD screen of Mi Max 2. The huge screen space on the Mi Max 3 will allow its users to take advantage of display modes such as split-screen and picture-in-picture.
Performance and Variants
With a battery size of 5,500mAh battery, the Mi Max 3 can last for up to 2 days by charging it once and it offers an impressive standby time of 1 month. The smartphone has arrived with support for 18W Quick Charge 3.0. It allows the phablet to charge up to 71 percent capacity in just 1 hour. It also carries support for reverse charging which means its massive battery can be used for charging other devices.
The 64 GB and 128 GB eMMC 5.1 storage editions of the Mi Max 3 respectively feature 4 GB and 6 GB of LPDDR4X RAM. The hybrid SIM slot on the smartphone can be used for adding a microSD card. For better gameplay experience, the SoC offers supports high frame rate and the smartphone includes gaming features such as game toolbox, one-click acceleration, anti-disturbance, video and screen capture and more.
Camera, Software and Other Features
The Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is the first Mi Max smartphone to arrive with dual rear cameras. The vertically arranged setup includes f/1.9 aperture 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 primary sensor with a pixel size of 1.4-micron which allows the phone to capture better images in dim-light. The main sensor is assisted by 5-megapixel depth sensor. It is fitted with soft-light LED equipped 8-mgeapixel front-facing camera that has f/2.0 aperture and pixel size of 1.12-micron.
The Mi Max 3 runs on MIUI 9.5 based Android 8.1 Oreo. With AI onboard, the cameras of the smartphone support portrait shots scene recognition and object identification. The selfie camera can also shoot better selfies through AI. The front camera also supports AI facial recognition. The rear panel of the phone houses a fingerprint scanner.
Xiaomi has also packed in its AI voice assistant in the Mi Max 3. The other features that are available on the phablet include dual speakers, IR blaster, dual VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, GPS and 3.5mm headphone jack.
Pricing and Availability
Now that the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is official, the online and offline retailers in China will begin its sale from July 20. The 64 GB + 4 GB and 128 GB + 6 GB Mi Max 3 models are respectively priced at 1,699 Yuan (~Rs. 17,349) and 1,999 Yuan (~Rs. 20,499) in China.
As mentioned above, it has arrived with same pricing as its predecessor model in the home market. Hence, there is a possibility that the 64 GB + 4 GB edition of Mi Max 3 for India may carry Rs. 16,999 price tag like the predecessor. As of this writing, there is no information available on the launch date of Mi Max 3 in India.
