There have been rumours that Xiaomi is prepping not one but four different smartphones with a 108MP camera sensor. Today, the first of the series has been showcased in China in the form of Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha concept smartphone. The latest flagship flaunts a 108MP camera, premium build quality, immersive display and a powerful spec sheet to boot. However, since it’s a concept phone there’s still a while to go before the Mi Mix Alpha hits the market.
Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha specifications
The Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha comes with a massive display, with edges that flow over to the sides and wrap around to the back. Xiaomi is calling the display ‘Surround Screen’ and it offers a mind numbing screen-to-body ratio of 180.6 percent. The company has managed to achieve this feat by replacing earpiece with display vibrate sound technology, and a very narrow chin. There’s no front camera either as users can simply use the display portion on the back as the viewfinder and use the 108MP camera as the selfie shooter. The physical buttons have also been replaced by the screen buttons on the side, except for the power/wake up button which is on the top. In regular usage, the side screen houses the notification icons and status bar icons. The rear portion can be used to place widgets and more. Xiaomi claims that despite being an all screen device, there won’t be any accidental touches thanks to the use of multiple sensors and AI.
There is a thin metal strip on the back housing the triple camera module of the Mi Mix Alpha. The concept smartphone is the world’s first phone to flaunt a 108-megapixel shooter on the back. The camera can capture images at a resolution of 12,032 x 9,024 pixels and has a sensor size of 1/1.33 inches. This is Samsung’s ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor, which is currently the world’s largest mobile camera sensor. Xiaomi also says that the camera features 8x zoom without losing out on the details, thanks to the 108MP sensor. The primary sensor is aided by a 20-megapixel wide-angle camera with 117-degree field of view and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens.
As for the core specs, the smartphone is powered by the latest Snapdragon 855+ chipset backed by an Adreno 640 GPU. The processor is further mated to 12GB RAM and 512GB storage. Powering the phone is a 4,050mAh battery with support for 40W fast charging. Xiaomi also said that the chassis of the smartphone has been constructed out of a Titanium alloy, which is 3 times stronger than stainless steel and 7 times stronger than aluminium. Additionally, the bar at the back is crafted from ceramic and cameras are portected using the Sapphire Glass.
