Xiaomi’s futuristic concept phone with a wraparound display, the Mi Mix Alpha, was unveiled in China last September. Limited units of the device have been made available for sale in the country, but the device was not launched outside of China. However, Xiaomi has now listed the Mi Mix Alpha on its official website in India. The device is listed under Mi Phones, and clicking on the phone opens a landing page. While an official product listing is usually a guarantee that a device will be launched, Pricebaba has learned that the Mi Mix Alpha launch is still being evaluated globally and for India. In the meantime however, Xiaomi will be showcasing the device across Mi Home stores in the country.
Making the Mi Mix Alpha available for consumers to experience without actually launching it is an interesting strategy for Xiaomi. The company is clearly looking to build awareness for its Mi brand, which has taken a backseat in recent years. The focus instead has been on Xiaomi’s Redmi brand, under which it has launched mostly budget and mid-range smartphones, with last year’s K20 Pro series being the only exception.
This year, Xiaomi plans to launch more devices under its Mi brand (the company has already teased the launch of the Mi Note 10), and creating buzz with the Mi Mix Alpha is a step in that direction.
Mi Mix Alpha specifications and price
The Mi Mix Alpha is a 5G concept device with with a flexible display that wraps around the edges and extends to the back. This leaves no bezels on the sides, but there are thin ones at the top and bottom. The only break in the display is a narrow vertical strip running along the back panel to house the three rear cameras. Speaking of the cameras, the primary sensor is a 108MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX unit, paired with a 20MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 12MP camera for portraits. It is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855+ SoC, along with 12GB RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.0 storage. There’s a 4,050mAh battery under the hood which comes with 40W fast charging.
The Mi Mix Alpha is priced at RMB 19,999 in China. Given that the phone is produced only in China, Xiaomi would need to import the device if it were to launch it commercially in India. Taking into account import and custom duties among other expenses, Xiaomi estimates that the Mi Mix Alpha would end up costing around Rs 2.5 lakh in India.
