Xiaomi has announced the Mi Play smartphone in China, the first Play series smartphone from the company. The Mi Play comes with gradient colour body, waterdrop notch screen, powerful chipset and dual rear cameras.
Design and Display
The Xiaomi Mi Play is the first smartphone from the company to feature a waterdrop notch screen. The slim-bodied smartphone features a glass rear with a gradient colour. It measures 7.5mm in thickness and weighs 150 grams.
The display of the smartphone features full HD+ resolution, 19:9 aspect ratio, 1500:1 contrast ratio, 432 ppi pixel density, sunlight legibility, night screen mode and eye protection mode.
Processor, RAM and Battery
The Mi Play is the first smartphone to feature the MediaTek Helio P35 chipset, a 12nm octa-core SoC clocked at 2.3GHz. For accelerated performance, the Helio P35 carries support for CPU and GPU dual Turbo technology.
To keep the lights on, the Mi Play is packed with a 3,000mAh battery which can be charged through USB Type-C. The smartphone runs MIUI based on Android 8.1 Oreo.
Cameras and Other Features
The AI-powered dual camera setup on the rear side of the Xiaomi Mi Play includes a 12-megapixel primary sensor and 2-megapixel depth sensor. The primary sensor is equipped with features like a 1.25 micron pixel size, portrait mode, automatic HDR and EIS.
Sitting inside the front notch of the phone is an AI-driven 8-megapixel selfie shooter that supports HDR and background blur. The display can also function as screen flash while capturing selfie shots. For biometric security, the Mi Play offers face unlock and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The handset lacks support for a microSD card and 3.5mm audio jack. It carries support dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2 and GPS.
Price and Release Date
The handset will be available in a 4GB RAM + 64GB storage version with a price tag of 1,099 Yuan (Rs 11,100). There is a possibility that the company may announce other variants for the smartphone in the coming weeks.
The Mi Play handset comes in colours like Twilight Gold, Fantasy Blue and Black. The Chinese manufacturer is offering 10GB of free high-speed data for 12 months. The first sale of the smartphone will begin tomorrow in China. International availability of the smartphone has not yet been announced.
