Xiaomi Opens 500+ Mi Stores Across India To Expand Offline Presence In Rural Areas

A recent International Data Corporation (IDC) report revealed that Xiaomi has been leading the Indian smartphone market for the past five consecutive quarters. Xiaomi is also the number one smart TV brand in the country. In an attempt to further strengthen its presence in the Indian market, the brand has announced that it has opened over 500 Mi Stores in the country. The Mi Stores are located in Tier 3, 4, 5 and below towns, and marks Xiaomi’s expansion into rural areas in the country. Incidentally, Xiaomi also created a new Guinness World Record by inaugurating the 500 retail outlets simultaneously at 12pm on October 29th.

The Mi Stores are located across 14 states in India, with some being in remote areas. These include one at Moreh, which is situated on the India-Burma border, and Aalo, Arunachal Pradesh, which is the last town in India situated before the Indo-China border.

In a press release, Xiaomi said it plans to open over 5,000 Mi Stores in India by the end of 2019. The brand expects this to generate nearly 15,000 jobs, and is inviting interested entrepreneurs to apply for a Mi Store franchise online.

Manu Kumar Jain, Xiaomi’s Global Vice-President and Managing Director for India, said “It’s a truly special moment for Xiaomi India to be celebrating yet another Guinness world record after having achieved one merely two months ago. We have been the No. 1 smartphone brand in India for 5 consecutive quarters. Over last few quarters, offline segment has been a great success story for us, with our offline market share growing about 40 times in one year. While our Mi Home & Mi Preferred Partner stores have performed exceptionally well in metro and large cities, our presence in smaller towns and villages was still negligible till now. “

The average size of each Mi Store is 300 square feet. Each store features the signature design of larger Mi Home stores that can be found major cities in the country. Xiaomi sells a wide range of products such as smartphones, smart TVs, fitness bands, power banks, audio devices and more, and these will be available to experience and purchase at the new Mi Stores.
