Chinese smartphone manufacturers OPPO and Huawei have used the periscope lens in the OPPO Reno 10x zoom and Huawei P30 Pro respectively to enhance the photography experience. Now Xiaomi is reportedly the latest brand to join the bandwagon. The patent application filed back in December 2018 in China titled ‘Camera Components and Electronic Devices’ was released a few days back. Xiaomi hasn’t officially announced anything yet.
The patent reveals the camera components which include a combination of the main camera with at least one periscope auxiliary lens. It will be placed perpendicular to the primary sensor. The tech offers optical zoom capabilities without increasing the thickness of the camera and lens modules. It can achieve a lossless zoom with optical image stabilisation. Currently the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom and Huawei P30 Pro are capable of covering focal lengths up to 160mm, so we expect Xiaomi’s version to be in the same range. The patent doesn’t reveal any other details regarding the tech.
It is not clear which upcoming Xiaomi smartphone will be equipped with periscope lens camera technology. However, as the tech is a premium feature it is speculated that Xiaomi’s flagship Mi Mix 4 could be the first one to use it. Notably, various speculations have hinted that the upcoming smartphone might use a 64MP ISOCELL GW1 sensor. Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed the launch date of Mi MIX 4 but it’s likely that the device will be unveiled later this month since its predecessor was launched last year in July.
