Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has officially teased the arrival of a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 powered smartphone. It is confirmed to debut next month. The executive took to the Chinese microblogging platform Weibo to share the announcement.
The exact name of the upcoming Xiaomi smartphone has not been revealed but it is expected to be the long-rumoured Xiaomi 12 Ultra. The device has already been spotted in leaked renders.
Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 powered Xiaomi phone teased
In a Weibo post, Lei Jun adds that the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 codenamed 8475 is a major leap in performance and energy consumption. The processor was launched last month and it is by no means a simple half-generation upgrade. Both Xiaomi and Qualcomm have spent time tuning the processor for several months.
The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is an enhanced version of last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. It is based on TSMC’s 4nm process and includes three cluster architectures of super-large core Cortex X2, large core A710, and a small-core A510.
Past reports suggest that the Xiaomi 12 Ultra will be powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. However, it is unclear which will be the first brand to announce a smartphone with the said chipset. Motorola, OnePlus, ASUS, Realme and iQOO are also said to be working on Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 powered phones that are tipped to launch in the next 1-2 months.
The Xiaomi 12 Ultra will arrive as the successor to the last year’s Mi 11 Ultra 5G. The brand has already partnered with legendary camera maker Leica to develop imaging capabilities for the upcoming Xiaomi 12 Ultra flagship.
