Xiaomi had launched the Redmi Note 4 in January 2017. It’s been over a year since the launch of Note 4 and the company has released any information on launching a successor phone for it. The Chinese manufacturer had launched the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus as the first full screen design phones with an affordable pricing in December 2017. Fresh reports suggest that the company may launch the Redmi 5 Plus smartphone as the Redmi Note 5 in India in February.
Xiaomi is yet to launch its first smartphone for this year. A tweet from Clinton Jeff, Xiaomi’s product PR representative suggests that the company will be debuting a new device in February. The Redmi Note 4 had met with 5 million sales last year. Hence, Xiaomi fans are now anticipating that the company may introduce the Redmi Note 5 smartphone next month. On the contrary, he could be also hinting towards the launch of Snapdragon 845 driven Xiaomi Mi 7 flagship at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 tech trade show that will be held at the end of next month.
An interesting thing to note is that Xiaomi hasn’t launched the Redmi Note 5 smartphone in China. Xiaomi has been launching Redmi Note series phones with larger display of 5.5 inches. Except for Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus that respectively feature 5.7-inch and 5.99-inch display, all the predecessor Redmi phones have featured a 5-inch display. Since the Redmi 5 duo arrived with a larger display, reports that have surfaced from China have claimed Xiaomi has axed its Redmi Note lineup.
Considering the immense popularity of Redmi Note phones in India, Xiaomi may launch the Redmi 5 Plus as Redmi Note 5. Selling smartphones with different names is not a new strategy of the company. The Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite smartphones that were launched in November 2017 in India were respectively launched as Redmi Note 5A Prime and Redmi Note 5A in China. Also, the Xiaomi Mi 5X smartphone that is exclusively available in the home country has arrived in India as Xiaomi Mi A1.
In China, the Redmi 5 Plus variants featuring 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage and 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage are now respectively available for 999 Yuan (~Rs. 9,950) and 1,299 Yuan and (~Rs. 12,950). If the handset arrives in India with RedmI Note 5, it will be priced around Rs. 10,000 competing with the likes of Honor 7X and Honor 9 Lite that also feature full screen design.
The Redmi 5 Plus supports 18:9 aspect ratio on its 5.99-inch display that produces FHD+ resolution of 2,160 x 1,080 pixels. It is driven by Snapdragon 625 chipset. It includes a 12-megapixel rear camera and a front-facing camera of 5-megapixel. The handset is running on MIUI 9 flavored Android Nougat OS and it is packed with a 4,000mAh battery.
