The last two years have not exactly been great for ZTE. It has faced embargo in some markets and it seemed like the company was heading towards bankruptcy. Things started looking better for ZTE after the ban was revoked earlier this year. The company has applied for a new smartphone design patent and the same has been published by CNIPA patent agency.
The patent details a dual-screen smartphone. Going by the schematics, the device is designed to house a larger display at the front with slim bezels. The second display is incorporated on the back and is placed next to the camera lens. Furthermore, the secondary screen is square and is likely to aid users while taking selfies. This also means that the device might not feature a front-facing camera as the rear camera can be used for selfies.
Moving on, the schematics also point at a triple rear camera setup alongside an LED flash. As far as buttons are concerned, the volume rockers and the power button are placed on the right side while the speaker grill and the charging port remain at the bottom. It looks like the device will sport USB Type-C port and will not come with the standard 3.5mm audio jack. ZTE is granted the patent, however, the patent might never make it to a production-spec device and even if it does it will take some time.
We have seen scores of devices with dual screen’s. Even iconic phones like the Moto Razr (and Meizu Pro 7 Plus) featured a secondary screen. However, ZTE is trying to do away with the front camera by offering a secondary display on the back. By doing so the company will be able to offer a better screen-to-body ratio and also a powerful rear camera for selfies.
