Editor Notes

The Moto X 2nd Gen is the successor of the popular Moto X, the device has got much better while retaining the features that made it stand out. The HTC One M8 Eye is a variant of the One M8 flagship device. These devices are similarly priced and have a lot of hardware in common, the main difference however is the build quality. The devices are solidly built and while there are a range of options to choose from for the Moto X, the One M8 Eye comes in a unibody aluminium finish.

The Moto X 2nd Gen has a slightly bigger display at 5.2 inches compared to the 5 inch screen on the HTC One M8 Eye. Both the phones have the same resolution and hence the One M8 Eye gets the advantage in terms of pixel density. The devices get Gorilla Glass 3 protection to keep their displays safe from scratches. Performance wise, both the devices have the same Snapdragon 801 Quad Core Chipset with 2GB of RAM. There however is a slight difference, the Moto X is clocked at a slightly higher 2.5GHz compared to the 2.3GHz clock on the HTC One M8 Eye.

The Moto X 2nd Gen comes with 2 storage options (16GB and 32GB) but the storage is non expandable, the One M8 Eye on the other hand comes with 16GB internal memory and a microSD expansion slot. So if you like carrying lots of content with you, the One M8 Eye gives you the flexibility to add more memory for storage. Both the devices have 13 megapixel cameras at the back, with the HTC One M8 Eye having an additional camera to capture more details allowing you to re-focus after capturing an image. In terms of video the Moto X manages 4K video whereas the HTC is limited to 1080p. The One M8 Eye has dual tone LED flash whereas the Moto X has a ring diffused LED setup.

Software wise both the device shipped with Kitkat and both will be updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop. At the time of writing, Motorola has already managed to update the Moto X 2nd gen to Lollipop while the M8 Eye is still waiting for the update. Battery performance is decent with upto one day of battery life on the devices. However, the HTC One M8 Eye has a slightly bigger battery at 2600mAh compared to the 2300mAh unit in the Moto X Gen 2.

The choice between these two devices isn’t very simple, with almost the same specifications the it all boils down to personal preference. The Moto X 2nd Gen offers lots finishes for the back panel including wood and bamboo. Motorola is very quick with software updates and the voice and gesture features are still a strong point for the Moto. If you agree with all these points the Moto X 2nd Gen is the right device for you. But if you want a phone that stands out, has an aluminium unibody construction and those loud BoomSound speakers, then the HTC One M8 Eye is the one to pick.
