Editor Notes

The Moto G has been awarded the best budget smartphone of the year 2014 by tech sites and the 620G is HTC’s latest attempt to take the title away from the Moto G. Both the phones are similarly priced and have a few things that are common on the spec sheet. They both have a 5 inch display with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels, a pixel density of 294 PPI. Both the phones have Corning Gorilla Glass 3 to provide protection for the display.

The Moto G has a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 which is a quad-core processor whereas the HTC 620 sports a 1.7GHz Mediatek MT6592 which is an octa-core processor. If you do believe in benchmarking, the HTC 620G scores higher than the Moto G Gen 2 thanks to the octa core processor. Both the phones have 1GB of RAM which is adequate to go about daily tasks. The 620G has 8GB of internal storage whereas the Moto G Gen 2 has 16GB of storage, the Moto G has the advantage here as it can store more apps and user data in the internal memory. Both devices have a MicroSD card slot that can be used to expand the storage to 32GB.

Both the devices have an 8 megapixel camera with an LED flash but surprisingly only the 620G can record video at 1080p whereas the Moto G is limited to 720p. Comparing the front facing camera, the HTC has a 5 megapixel snapper while the Moto G has the run of the mill 2 megapixel unit.

Software wise the HTC 620G and the Moto G both were launched with Android 4.4 Kitkat. The Moto G got an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop but there is not news of Lollipop for the 620G. The user interface on both the phones is minimalistic with minimal changes done by HTC and Motorola. Both the devices have front facing stereo speakers which enhance the music listening experience. The 620G has a 2100mAh removable battery while the Moto G has a 2070mAh non removable battery.

A choice between the two will depend on personal preference, if you want a performance device with good cameras then the HTC 620g should satisfy your requirements. But if you want an all rounder that runs on the latest Android OS- Lollipop then the Moto G is your safest bet.
