Editor Notes

Moto X 2nd Gen is is the successor to the Moto X. The Moto X won many accolades for being ergonomic, but the same cannot be said about its successor. The Moto X 2nd Gen sports a 5.2 inches Full HD display. The phone is slim at the sides but bulges at the center and may not be very comfortable to hold. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is a successor to the Galaxy S4 but the company received a lot of flak for making the device bulkier and more unpleasing to look at than the S4. The S5 sports a 5.1 inches, 1080p display.

Both the devices were shipped with Android 4.4 (KitKat) and have received the update to Android Lollipop (5.0), the Moto received it first as it offers almost stock Android. Samsung is known to delay updates as they have a huge line up of devices and it take a lot of time to make TouchWiz compatible with them. With regards to the camera, the rear camera on the Moto X 2nd Gen has a 13 Megapixel sensor while the Galaxy S5 haas 16 Megapixel sensor. While image quality is not only to do with pixels but also post processing skills, the one on the S5 is much better than that of the Moto X 2nd Gen. Samsung has always done a good job with the camera on its flagship devices. The downside of the Moto X 2nd Gen is that it lacks a microSD card slot while the S5’s storage can support a microSD card of up to 128 GB.

Performance wise, both have powerful processors (Snapdragon 801 on the Moto X 2nd Gen and Exynos on the S5) and the performance is really good. If you purchase either of the phones then you will not have a non-laggy experience. Battery of the Galaxy S5 is more powerful than the Moto X 2nd Gen (2800 mAh vs 2300 mAh). But Samsung needs to put in bigger batteries in their phones as TouchWiz tends to drain battery. Though the 2300mAh battery on the Moto X 2nd Gen felt a bit small as it has a Full HD display and a powerful processor but users claim that the battery optimization is good and has gotten even better after the update to Lollipop.

It’s really difficult to choose between these two phones as both are very good in their own ways. So, choose the Moto X 2nd Gen if you want a near to stock Android experience, quicker updates and a better looking phone. But if you want a phone with a better camera and software that lets you customize big time, then you should opt for the Galaxy S5.
