Editor Notes

The Xiaomi Mi4 and OnePlus One are providing each other a stiff competition in the market as both the devices offer high end specifications for a very reasonable price. In fact, the OnePlus One was available in a standard 64GB variant in India while Xiaomi launched the Mi4 in 16GB only. But knowing that people may opt for the One due to more storage space, Xiaomi brought out the 64GB of the Mi4. Now both the phones have a 64GB and a 16GB model but the One is slightly cheaper in both the options.

On paper, there is very little to separate the two. Both the devices run on a 2.5GHz, Snapdragon 801 processor, come with 3GB of RAM and have a 13 Megapixel camera on the back. Both the phones are capable of recording 4K videos (2160p). Also the Mi4 has 8 Megapixel front camera as compared to the 5 Megapixel on the One. So if you are a fan of clicking selfies then the Mi4 may just be a better option. While the battery power difference is nominal (3080 mAh on the Mi4 vs 3100 mAh on the One), the main decisive factor while deciding which one to buy maybe the screen size. Both the phones have a Full HD display but the One has a 5.5 inch screen as compared to the 5 inch Mi4. If you are a fan of big screen phones then One may be a good choice or else its form factor will not be so comfortable. That is mainly because the phone is a bit long. On the other hand, the Mi4 is quite ergonomic for a 5 inch device.

In terms of software, both are shipped with Android KitKat (4.4) but the One runs on CyanogenMod and the Mi4 on Xiaomi’s in-house MiUi. Both these skins offer its users a lot of customization and they may not miss out much from Android Lollipop (5.0). Now in regards to performance, they both are at par. The Snapdragon 801 is more than capable of handling heavy usage so you won't get any significant lag on these phones. Although, at times the Mi4 did get sluggish and that can be blamed on MiUi. After all, those tweaks may have an impact on performance. The photos clicked on the Mi4 look more vibrant than those from the One but the One had much more detail. Now to battery, the battery on the Mi4 lasts slightly longer than the One.

So, if you have to choose one of these devices, then go with the Mi4 as it feels better in hand and has a better camera and battery performance. Also, the One’s that are bought in India won't get any further updates from CyanogenMod and users would have to flash their devices to get the OxygenOS that the OnePlus is working on. Now, we arent sure as to what that OS will offer, so the Mi4 does seem a safer option as Xiaomi provides a lot of updates with new features. But, like mentioned above, if you like big screen phones then possibly go in for the OnePlus One.
