Google Pixel Quick Review
- Vivid AMOLED display, sharp at 441PPI
- Google Assistant and built in gestures ease the user experience
- Cameras produce good pictures & thanks to EIS, video recording turns out stable
- Unlimited photos and videos backup at full resolution for lifetime
- Overall snappy performance from the device and battery life holds up good
- Lacks VoLTE support out of the box
- IP53 dust and splash resistant, not IP67
- Missing stereo speakers is a sort of downgrade for Nexus 6P users
- Bigger chin and forehead makes it feel huge compared to other 5 inch devices
Google this year in 2016 has decided to drop their Nexus branded smartphones and instead take their very own Pixel brand ahead now to smartphones along with already existing Pixel C. The much speculated Google phone, Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL were also rumored to sport Google's own chipset ditching Snapdragon.
Design and Display
Design of the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL looks sturdy and solid along with premium materials like Metal and Glass being used. The smaller Google Pixel would be an ideal choice for people looking to use their phones single handedly. That being said the smaller device sports a 5 inch AMOLED display that has 1920x1080 (Full HD) pixels resolution giving it a pixel density of 401PPI. Whereas the bigger Google Pixel XL comes with a 5.5 inch display with a resolution of 2560x1440 (Quad HD) resolution and giving it a pixel density of 534PPI. Also, both the phone's display are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4.
Hardware and Features
Talking about the performance, the two phones feature the latest Snapdragon 821 Quad Core processor clocked at 2.15GHz and paired along with the processor you get 4GB of RAM and this in total sounds excellent and top of the line performance. On the software front, the devices being Google's own, pack the latest version of Stock Android 7.1 Nougat and will also be the first to receive the latest Android updates in the future. Other than the performance, Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL also comes with a fingerprint sensor on the back of the device, much like Google last generation of processors Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X.
Camera and Storage
On the back of the device these phones rock a 12MP camera that can record videos up to 4K and also features Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) along with an LED Flash beside the camera. Whereas on the front above the display of Pixel and Pixel XL sits a 8MP sensor for all your selfie and video calling needs. The last year Nexus phone's had one of the best cameras and is now yet to see how these new Google phones perform in the camera department. Coming to storage capacity, Pixel and Pixel XL come in two storage options viz. 32GB and 128GB and as usual they do not support MicroSD card expansion.
Battery and Connectivity
Google Pixel packs in a battery of 2770mAh which sounds quite decent considering Android's Doze, on the other hand Google Pixel XL packs a 3450mAh battery. The two phones come with USB Type-C port with support for fast charging and wireless charging. In terms of connectivity, the phones come with standard support of WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, 4G LTE with VoLTE support for Reliance Jio. Unfortunately, the phone lacks Dual SIM support for those looking for it.
