Motorola Moto X 2nd Gen Features

The new Moto X (2nd Gen or Moto X 2014) is the much-asked-for improvement over the original Moto X – which although not a commercial hit, was a darling among tech enthusiasts. Taking forward truly useful features like Touchless Controls, Active Notifications, the twist-to-open Camera Gesture, the new Moto X also satisfies most of the complaints people had with the original.

Starting with the display — which now has a 1080p resolution, while still being of the AMOLED type. But the screen size is bumped from 4.7 to 5.2 inches, increasing the dimensions also. It is now powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core 2.5GHz chip, while retaining the same 2GB RAM and 16GB or 32GB internal memory. The camera is also bumped up to 13 megapixels, and is complimented by a unique dual flash ring system. The camera can also record 4K video. It has a slightly bigger 2300mAh battery.

Now moving beyond specs, the Moto X 2nd Gen takes touchless controls to the next level, by allowing you to configure the phrase from the default “Ok Google Now” to anything you want. Next, you can also use voice to interact with third party apps like Facebook and WhatsApp. The phone also has two infrared sensors at the bottom that allow for gestures like waving your hand across the phone to show your notifications, or to silence a call or alarm. By the way, Active Notifications now also shows more than one notification.

The launch price suggests this phone will be in price range of the LG Nexus 5. Also, right now the Moto X 2014 is running Android 4.4.4 KitKat but has a guaranteed upgrade to Android L.

Moto x Gen 2 is not that great a phone for the price. The front camera is awful. Internal storage is less. The battery life is also poor. It's just a phone for the person trying to get involved in the Android market without high usage.
The Good
  • Performance
  • Rear camera
The Bad
  • Battery life
  • Front camera
